Carla and a Friend I
C-print, 24 x 24 inches, 2002

While working on Animal Crossdressing, an interesting side project materialized. The pet snake that I was working with had befriended a rat that was initially given to her to eat. They had been cohabitating for weeks at the point when I met them (the snake had eaten other rats, but wouldn't touch this one). The animals were completely comfortable with one another and I produced a series of photographs that documents their interaction. This idealized "friendship" was easy to embrace and the images aimed to place the viewer in an interesting double bind, where this highly unnatural state of affairs was in fact whole-heartedly embraced and sentimentally celebrated.
